This Shanik and Vij’s co-founder will be cooking up three dishes featured at her acclaimed restaurants. Chai and conversation will be plentiful, as will copies of her two books, Vij’s and Vij’s at Home. The $30 class fee includes generous samples. Unsurprisingly, this one sold out fast, but you can still join the waitlist.
FRIDAY, May 30
Birthday Celebration at Hot Cakes
Chocolatier Autumn Martin will be celebrating the two-year anniversary of her Ballard molten cakery with a milkshake cart(!) and discount cakes. The milkshake cart will be serving up $5 top-your-own sundaes outside the shop from noon to 8pm, and molten cakes will be $6 all day long.
SUNDAY, June 1
Sunday Feast at Tavolàta
This month’s Sunday Feast will feature the best of the Pacific Northwest’s early summer bounty, from a starter of pea vines with wild mushrooms and mint to a porcini mushroom bucatini with fava bean sugo and Pecorino. These $60 family-style meals often sell out, so reserve your spot by calling 206-838-8008.
MONDAY, June 2
60th Anniversary at Beth’s Café
Beth’s weeklong anniversary celebration will kick off at 6am with a drawing competition and a special 1950s menu (with 1950s prices to match). A portion of Monday’s profits will go to Treehouse, a local nonprofit benefitting foster children. The birthday celebration concludes on Saturday at 8:30pm with a 50s- themed party and costume contest.
Mamnoon Junoon
Seattle Met’s restaurant of the year will be channeling a casual vibe for its first industry night. There will be a number of food stations, including a make-your-own falafel bar and a shwarma stand. Walk-ins will pay $30 for unlimited access to food stations and a drink ticket, and service industry members will receive a $10 discount. Call 206-906-9606 to RSVP.
Meatless Monday at Tallulah’s
Linda Derschang’s newest spot has hopped on the Meatless Monday bandwagon—for a good cause, no less. Tallulah’s will be donating ten percent of this week’s Meatless Monday sales to Food in Motion. This offshoot of Operation Sack Lunch re-purposes wasted food into nutritious meals for homeless shelters throughout the city.
Negroni Week AND Sherry Week
Yep, both of these run June 2–8. Local establishments are mixing up variations of this gin, vermouth, and Campari cocktail; part of the proceeds from each Negroni sold will go to various charities. Meanwhile, bars and restaurants around town are geeking out on Spain's signature fortified wine. Here are more details.
BEYOND
Pacific Northwest Cider Awards
The Woods tasting room in SoDo will be packed with Washington cider enthusiasts during the first annual Cider Awards. There will be 25+ Northwest ciders on tap, and two food trucks will be on site: the gluten-free Contigo and the decidedly not gluten-free po’boy-mobile Where Ya At Matt. Each $30 advance ticket is good for eight 5-oz tastings and a voting slip for the People’s Choice Award.
Celebrity Chef Tour Dinner at RN74
The James Beard Foundation’s dinner series will come to RN74 for the restaurant’s third anniversary on June 15, bringing with it a pretty incredible lineup of chefs. Michael Mina will join chef David Varley, along with Boston's Jamie Bissonette (his James Beard acceptance speech this year was a thing of beauty), Canlis chef Jason Franey, and Portland's Jason Barwikowski, previously at Woodsman Tavern. Providence chef Matthew Jennings and Adam Sobel of RN74 San Francisco will also be in the kitchen. Scoring this multi-course meal: wine pairings from Sommelier of the Year Jeff Lindsay-Thorsen. Tickets for the star-studded event cost $180 and are available online.
