The onslaught of season announcements continues, as Balgan Theatre has revealed a 2014–15 season packed with off-color musicals. The six-musical lineup includes three world premiere productions: Bad Apples, Make Me Bad, and Citizen Ruth. Bad Apples playwright Jim Leonard's brain must work a little differently then most, as the Abu Ghraib torture controversy wouldn't make most think, "This needs to be a musical!" With songs that mix rock, pop, rap, and country while exploring the messy American ideals of war, Bad Apples doesn't pull punches. Make Me Bad doesn't get much lighter, as it details a woman who unknowingly falls for a serial killer. The musical adaptation of Alexander Payne's film Citizen Ruth finishes the run of world premieres with its tale of a drug addicted pregnant woman who becomes the focus of an intense abortion debate. The established works on the slate include The Who's rock opera Tommy (presented at the Moore Theatre), Urinetown's sharp capitalist satire, and steamy off-Broadway hit Murder Ballad.
Subscriptions for Balagan Theatre's 2014–15 season are on sale now at balagantheatre.org. This year, they've introduced a new subscription model; instead of a traditional subscription where one gets tickets to every show, patrons will now be offered blocks of flex tickets (six, twelve, eighteen, or twenty four) which can be used for whatever shows they desire to see.
